Hiring a chimney prowhat to ask and when to book
A standard chimney visit is a sweep and a visual inspection of the flue, cap, crown and firebox. Ask whether the company runs a camera up the flue, since cracked tiles and liner gaps are not visible from below.
Sweeps book up from September through December; a spring appointment is easier to get and gives time to schedule repairs before the burning season.
Liner replacement, crown rebuilds and tuckpointing are quoted separately after an inspection, so expect two visits for anything beyond a cleaning.
Questions worth asking
Every chimney listing on this directory shows the owner's answer to one trade question when they have given it: Are you certified, and do you do liners and masonry repair? Along with free estimates and after-hours availability, that answer is labeled "owner reported" with the date we asked.
