Hiring a HVAC prowhat to ask and when to book

Heating and cooling companies vary in what they service. Some handle oil and propane furnaces, some only gas and electric, and heat pumps and mini-splits need a tech trained on that brand.

Ask which equipment the company installs and whether they service units they did not install.

No-heat and no-cool calls are prioritized in the first cold snap and first heat wave; a maintenance visit in spring or fall is the cheapest way to avoid those calls.

Ask whether a service agreement includes priority scheduling.

Questions worth asking

Every HVAC listing on this directory shows the owner's answer to one trade question when they have given it: Heating, cooling, or both, and do you offer maintenance plans? Along with free estimates and after-hours availability, that answer is labeled "owner reported" with the date we asked.
